The Battle of Khotyn was fought on November 11, 1673 near the present-day border of Ukraine and Moldova. In this battle, the Polish army led by Grand Hetman of the Crown, Jan Sobieski, and the Turkish-Tatar army stood on one side. It is estimated that the Polish-Lithuanian side had approx. 30 thousand. people, while the Turkish-Tatar army numbered approx. 35 thousand. soldiers. The first clashes began on November 10, but their main purpose was to recognize the Turkish position by the Polish army. On the night of November 10-11, Polish troops harassed the opposing side with sham attacks, which led to considerable fatigue of the enemy on the day of the actual battle, i.e. November 11. It is worth adding that on that day there was a slight snowstorm and the temperature dropped significantly below zero, which was unfavorable for the Turkish-Tatar side. The attack was started by rushed dragoons and the infantry, which destroyed the field fortifications and "prepared" the area for the hussars' charge, which shortly later took place under the direct command of Hetman Stanis³aw Jab³onowski. As a result of this daring charge, the Turkish army started to panic, which led to an uncoordinated retreat towards Kamieniec Podolski. The sultan's army probably lost around 25,000-30,000. people and the entire artillery park that entered the battle. The battle brought the Republic of Poland considerable prestige on the international arena, and it greatly facilitated Jan Sobieski's victory in the election to the king of Poland.
